After a disappointing Tour de France with serious problems Rominger showed an increasing form in autumn, winning some big Time-Trials. In october he started preparations for his attack on the hour record.
His first test riding on the track ended with a crash, because he had no experience riding a fixed gear bike. But after a remarkably short time these problems where gone. For his first attempt no spectators and TV where allowed. Rominger wasn’t shure if his performance would be worth it ….
But he improved Miguel Indurain’s record by almost 800 meters! Knowing that he could ride faster he did more testing, riding 30 minutes with an average speed of 54 km/h.
On the 5th of november he started his second attempt. This time there where spectators and a Live-TV coverage on Eurosport. I will never forget the excitement during that hour. Starting incredible fast, he smashed all previuos lap-times, riding with more than 55 km/h. Without any major problems he could even increase his speed in the last minutes. With 55.291 km he improved his own record by more than 1.4 km, but Indurain’s mark by 2.251 km!
